AN EXCERPT:
Today the words had escaped her, slipping over the darkening horizon. There was an emptiness between them and Melody knew this night was destined to fade away on the breath of another whispered lie.
“We’ll see each other again someday,” Adam murmured beneath his heavy breath. His gaze rested upon Melody’s face, sending a flush of color to warm her cool cheeks. The winter winds wrapped about her, seeping beneath her coat to penetrate her skin. She was aware of its presence though it did not faze her. The cruel winter could not touch the chill from within.
She drew a shaky breath, cursing her body for betraying her when her strength was all she had left. Melody let her gaze fall from the heavens to rest upon his upon face. His eyes, which should have held the softness of sympathy, swam with an uncomfortable guilt instead. He knows he was lying, she thought bitterly. He knows he’s saying goodbye without having to utter the hurtful phrase. As she willed the painful tears away, Melody wondered how they’d gotten here so fast… So far away from where they had once began.
“Please don’t make promises neither of us has any intention of keeping.”
Her callous words, though poised as cold and uncaring, sliced Melody directly through the heart. If he felt it too, she’d never have known, for his face was an unreadable mask.
As she turned to walk away, Melody was powerless against the tears that refused her desperate request to stay away. With each step she took, she felt the pieces of her heart falling away.
